Thieves’ Oil - the recipe for an aromatherapy disinfection mixture.
Legend has it that in the fourteenth-century, during the rampant plague epidemic called Black Death, there was a group of thieves who robbed the corpses and estates of the infected, yet none of them ever got sick. When they were finally caught, they were made to confess. The secret was a mixture of vinegar-macerated herbs that they rubbed in their feet, skin around their lips, temples and hands.
French doctors also became interested in the thief mixture – equipped with masks resembling long beaks, they were putting cloths soaked in oil inside to avoid infection.
The mixture has been tested by scientists from the American Weber State University. The research has confirmed its anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-infection properties.
Get to know its composition:
1. Clove (eugenia caryophyllata thunb) oil: very strong antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties.
2. Lemon (citrus limon) oil: strong antiseptic, boosts the immune system.
3. Cinnamon (cinnamomum zeylanicum) bark oil: prevents the spread of viral, bacterial and fungal infections. It significantly strengthens the effects of other oils, constituting an important ingredient of the mixture.
4. Eucalyptus (eucalyptus radiata) leaf oil: antiseptic and antiviral effect. Strengthens the immune system and effectively clears the airways.
5. Rosemary (officinallis rosmarinus) oil: anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antiseptic effect.
How to use the ready mixture?
The simplest formula is a disinfectant liquid for use in a spray; this is used for spraying hands, clothes, objects and other surfaces; it is also good to spray it indoors to disinfect the air. Spray your hands both before leaving home to prevent viral infection and to disinfect on return.
200 drops of pure blend according to the proportions given on the infographic (you can mix at your discretion, but always remembering the restrictions associated with the irritating effects of clove and cinnamon oils) mix with 60 ml of spirit and 50 ml of distilled water (available in supermarkets and at gas stations ). Spirit itself has an additional antiseptic effect; oils also dissolve well in it.
A prepared blend of pure oils should first be mixed with spirit and only then with water.
(If you don’t have one oil, you can skip it and supplement the blend with one of the other oils. However, the best effect will have a mixture created from the above ingredients. This creates a synergy effect: their antiviral effect is mutually reinforced.)
Remember that, due to the use of lemon oil in the mixture, you should not expose your hands sprayed with it to direct sunlight as its phototoxic properties can cause discoloration of the skin of the hands.
What else can we use it for?
The mixture of pure oils can be added to an all-natural cream (approx. 40 drops per 50 ml of cream); rubbing it into your hands you will get the effect of 'protective gloves'.
According to some sources, in the Middle Ages similar protection was used against germs: vinegar-macerated plants were rubbed into the hands, protective oil-perfumed gloves were made in the famous French town of Grasse, where modern aromatherapy was born.
A few to a dozen or so drops of the pure 'Thieves' blend can also be applied via a diffuser or an aroma lamp to disinfect space in closed rooms.
An additional advantage of using oils is their beautiful fragrance. Thanks to it, the blend will not only have a positive effect on our body, but also on the psyche: at the same time we care for cleanliness and health as well as calm and soothe the nervous system. Feeling good has a positive effect on our immune system.
Rosemary oil was one of the main ingredients of the famous 'Queen of Hungary Water', commissioned by Elżbieta Łokietkówna. It was the first European perfume to conquer the world with its beautiful fragrance as well as effectiveness in fighting off and preventing infectious diseases.
Cinnamon oil research by the French biologist J.C. Lapraz, demonstrated extremely effective anti-viral properties of it. Lapraz used to say that no virus would survive in the presence of cinnamon oil. Interestingly, the wealth of the rulers of India and China was often evaluated in relation to the quantity of the oil they possessed.
Relying on centuries of tradition, we can also successfully use the beneficial properties of essential oils nowadays.
